Koreb Miodowe (#90)

This week I continue with Polish beers. I bought Koreb in a farmer's market on a New Town marketplace in Warsaw. And...

My thoughts on the beer... I am glad I did.

Harboe Classic Jubileum 110 (#61)

For my last beer in Copenhagen I've chosen an anniversary beer from Harboe brewery. They make a bunch of different beers with different labels which are changed quite often to tell you the truth.
One latest brand is particularly interesting. I didn't see in stores so I cannot tell you how it tastes but the idea behind the beer is very up-to-date, at least environment wise.

Coming back to Harboe Classic 110. Let's see the review, shall we.

The review is also available on YouTube.

1. [PRE-REVIEW]

  • brewery: Harboe Bryggeri, Denmark
  • type of beer: lager
  • bought in: a store in Copenhagen
  • container grade (bottle): standard with sort of fancy label

2. [REVIEW]

  • the looks: head (fat white), body (light yellow)
  • the taste: slightly hoppy and airy (might be to bitter for some)
  • the smell: smell less

3. [RECOMMENDATION]

And this concludes Copenhagen episodes.

Leffe blonde (#35) and bruine (#36)

In this episode I try something new. I'm comparing two different beers of the same beer brand. The brand is of Belgium origin of course. Slowly but surely the Belgium months are coming to an end. Just a few left.

History of beer cans

I don't know if you collected cans as a child but I certainly did. The beer ones were usually the best. Soda cans are just so ordinary, aren't they. I might reconsider my last statement.

Mort Subite (#33)

In today's episode of Girl Likes Beer podcast I try a beer of an interesting name and origin. It's a Belgium lambic called Mort Subite. If you don't know what a lambic beer is I recommend reading this article from NY Times.

The name of this beer comes from a Brasserie in Brussels...
About 1910 Mr. THEOPHILE VOSSEN ran an establishment called "LA COUR ROYALE". Amongst his many customers were a lot of employees working at the National Bank of Belgium. Those employees passed their time in the pub playing a dives game called "421". Before returning to the office , the employees played a quick last game and the one who lost was called the: "MORT SUBITE" or the sudden death.

Very soon this name became well known and when THEOPHILE VOSSEN moved to this actual address in 1928 he decided to call his pub: "AT THE MORT SUBITE". The same name as this own beers.

Let's look at the review, shall we...

Drink beer, live longer

A recent study (published in JECH) shows that regular drinking of small amounts (half a glass) of beer or wine prolongs our lives. Wine outranks beer in this field adding 5 more years while beer gives just 2,5 extra years to our lifetime. Apparently moderate drinking (the key word moderate) lowers risk of heart disease.

This is a first study to give superiority to one alcohol over the other.

Well, you know what I say. Have a beer, save the economy. Now you get a bonus and live 2,5 years longer. Cool, right?

The history of Beer

The diagram shows what happened and when to explain why we can enjoy beer today. It goes with my new saying "Have a beer! Save the economy!".

United States of Breweries

Earlier this year I showed you a cool infographic with the best breweries in United States. Recently, I have found another map of United States with relation to beer and breweries. It shows the number of breweries per million people. I guess the more north you go the more beers you will find. Or less people you will meet;)

Beer goggles not true?

As you probably remember last week on "I like Beer Ads" I recalled a cool Tuborg ad known as "Beer Goggles". This week I have learned that this effect associated with beer is apparently untrue. And this has been tested by scientist. They cannot be wrong, right.

The research has shown that alcohol makes men see women as less attractive. So totally opposite as the famous "beer goggles" concept.

The scientists asked several men and women (half sober, half slightly drunk) in pubs to comment on pictures of other men and women. Surprisingly the results were as follows. Alcohol has a different effect on men and on women. Women lost the ability to guess the age of the photo models. Also the results indicated that after alcohol men seem to perceive women as less attractive.

You can find out more here.

So guys and girls, what do you think. Maybe have a beer. And save the economy!

Drink up! Save the economy.

Last week I've learn that drinking beer is a crucial activity that can help us in this economy. According to Fox5News beer generates more than 15000 jobs in Nevada state, and nearly 2 million jobs in the whole country. So if you wonder how you can help everyone in this challenging times. The answer is simple. Have a beer!

To better understand the beer consumption in the US and worldwide you can check out some cool info-graphics I've come across recently.

Beer soap

How much do you love beer? The why question has been addressed some time ago. If you love this beverage enough to bathe in it here's something for you. A beer soap.
The Beer Soap Company set up an account on Etsy and is selling bars of beer soap (5 bars for $20) made up of various beer brands. You can find there Double Chocolate Stout, Foster's and even Tyskie.

The revolutionary beer

As I learned today, in the following months we will see some new revolutionary beer launched onto the market by various brewers and under various brands. The research shows that beer is much more tasty and has less drunk effect if it is produced upside down. Generally, this means that once the beverage is on the foam, and not under it, it has much more health value. The biggest advantages are as follows:
  • you can drive after even 4 bottles of the upside-down beer
  • you don't have and alcoholic breath (the foam clears it)
  • the production costs are much smaller so we can expect some reduced prices
The first brands to use this revolutionary concept are Guiness, Krug, Amstel and Iguana. To better understand the concept see the pictures below.

Endless Beer Can

As you have probably noticed I prefer bottled beer over the same one in a can. However I can understand that a gadget I am about to describe can be entertaining for a can beer enthusiast or for just about anyone really.
Found through CrunchGear, I present you Mugen Kan Beeru (the endless beer can). It is a unique concept that allows you to repeat (endlessly) the joy of opening a can of beer.
The price is rather moderate, $9 a piece. So if you want to impress (or not) your friends with one of these, wait until June, go to Japan and purchase the funny beer gadget in Bandai store.

PS. I'm kidding, of course. However the gadget really exists.

Beer Wars in 32 days

Not sure how I've missed this but there is a very promising movie coming to cinemas across US in 32 days. It's called Beer Wars and tells the story behind the beer industry in USA. We will witness two beer entrepreneurs struggling with big beer corporations to bring great beer to the customer, meaning you and me.
I won't be able to view this film since I don't live in US. However, I highly recommend that you watch it. So you can tell me how great it was.
While waiting for the premiere and/or another video review, enjoy the trailer.

To check if you can see the movie in  your hometown check the participating theatres list.

And why do you love beer
